Good morning and welcome to the Increase Your Impact Podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode

0:04.5

2007. In the 1960s, psychologist Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson conducted a study that

0:14.5

showed how powerful belief can be. They randomly told teachers that certain students, chosen by chance, were, quote,

0:24.5

blooms. And they were on the verge of significant growth. And what ended up happening was very

0:30.7

interesting. Those students ended up thriving. They performed better. They worked harder and achieved

0:37.4

more, not because they were actually

0:39.7

more talented or smarter, but because their teachers believed in them. For coaches, this is an important

0:47.8

principle to remember. It's called a pig million effect. Athletes will rise or fall to the level of your belief in them, your confidence

0:59.5

of them and how you treat them. When you show confidence in their potential, you treat them

1:05.1

like they're capable of being the best version of themselves. You treat them as if they're capable of greatness.

1:12.5

And that creates opportunities for growth. And then all of a sudden, they start to see

1:16.7

themselves that way as well. And so belief isn't just a feeling. It's a catalyst for their

1:24.8

action and growth. So as a coach, the way you see your athletes and the way you treat your athletes just might

1:33.0

change the way they see themselves and the way they perform.

1:38.1

And that's where the magic ends up happening.

1:40.3

So my question to you is who is a person you're coaching? Who is a person you're leading or who is a

1:46.4

teammate, someone you know that you can sing you can do a better job of signaling your belief in them.

1:54.2

It might be the words you say, the way you treat them, the way you look at them, the way you

1:58.9

talk to them. All of that plays a role.

2:02.6

And so if you want them to perform better, be better, be the best version of themselves,

2:07.3

start with believing in them and letting them know and showing them that you believe in them.

2:12.6

Have a great day and we'll do it again next time.
