The thing that I find to be frightening about Tucker Carlson is how he's so effectively able to simultaneously embrace a sort of grievance culture, where to your point, Max, he's the underdog.

Everyone's out to get the legacy American, which is this term they've come up with so that he doesn't have to talk and explicitly racial terms.

He means Americans who've been here for a long time, which I personally, as an American descendant of slaves, find to be hilarious because I suspect that I'm not considered to be a legacy American, despite having been here longer than almost every white person here.

Definitely longer than Tucker Carlson.

He's able to simultaneously orient himself as like the victim, but also attack historically marginalized groups for ever articulating anything about their own well documented, often legally backed persecution by the state.

He's able to occupy that role without succumbing to those, a lot of liberals who've been pointing out the hypocrisy for a long time. He has that thing that Trump has this kind of teflon shield where any critique of what he says rolls off.

And some of it, I think, is because liberals often charge him with more than they can prove in the same way they did with Donald Trump.

So for example, there's an anecdote at the beginning of part one of this series. It opens talking about how he's covering immigrants at the southern border.

And he described them as making America poorer and dirtier. People obviously object to this.

He says, look, this isn't racism. This is just the facts of the matter. Here's a report that says for every immigrant that comes to the southern border, there's eight pounds of trash that get left in the desert.

It's literally dirtier. And I think that for people who subscribe to his broader politic and feel themselves to be underdogs don't necessarily want to see themselves as racist, even if their behavior might indicate otherwise.

There's enough plausible deniability. And most of what he says that liberals who critique him as being racist, that critique doesn't land it.

And in fact, Tucker Carlson then weaponizes that and says they want to shut us up by calling us racist. And I see that pattern working out in my personal life, it has caused me to want to avoid the whole thing because it seems like a loose lose.

But that also when I read an article like this and see his growing influence and see the growing influence of this kind of thinking to your point, Max, it's not just about Tucker Carlson.

I'm starting to feel like ignoring it is not adequate at the same time as I don't know exactly how to combat that quick sand that he set up for us.

What do you make of that Trevor?

A big problem, I think I have a the whole thing is it's kind of baked in I think for us to lose because I think one problem that ends up happening is even though people debate on this, I think for the most part, I don't think media is mostly left wing.

But I do think it is mostly at least center left or DNC establishment compatible. I think what gives Tucker Carlson a big advantage is Fox News in general, they're kind of the only game in town for that.

Whereas it's kind of hard for I think one voice among liberals or the left to really become that because they won't really let the left on cable news in any appreciable way period.

And centrist liberals are like a dime a dozen. There's like who you're going to get Ellie mistil or Van Jones, the BLM founders, Jamal Bui, Tanasi codes or some white person on the left Rachel.

Rachel mad up John Oliver, there's just so many people, but I think Fox, there's a structural rigging that I think really lend itself to helping people like Tucker Carlson, like if you want to hear mainstream white supremacist views like Fox News and in particular Tucker Carlson is the only game in town.

So I think that kind of helps the numbers and I don't really think I have a solution to your question just another layer to the problem like that's part of the issue like for one so use the word white supremacist and there's a part of my brain that goes, oh Lord, don't say that.
