Oh, my. Hello, you're listening to The Science of Everything podcast, episode 137, The Digestive System.

0:40.3

I'm your host, James Fodor.

0:42.2

In this episode, we're going to have a journey through the human digestive system

0:45.8

and talk about how we digest and obtain nutrients from our food.

0:50.8

Obviously, this is going to include a coverage of the major components of the digestive system,

0:55.6

including the mouth, the tongue, the esophagus, the stomach, the small and large intestines,

1:40.9

accessory organs. So the gastrointestinal tract or the GI tract

1:45.0

is a passageway that runs from one end of the body right through to the other.

1:50.0

In fact, technically, the inside space within the gastrointestinal tract

1:55.0

is actually topologically, at least, outside of the body.

1:59.0

The food doesn't actually truly enter the body

2:00.9

until it's absorbed across the epithelial cells that line the gastrointestinal tract, but we'll

2:05.7

talk about that later. The GI tract is made up of the mouth through to the esophagus, through
