Today I want to read to you an excerpt from a book called Mind Your Own Business by Sidney Harmon.

And Sidney says, quote, I liken our executive team to a jazz quartet in which each player is the master of his instrument, but subordinates

his plane to that of the group. The improvisation and invention that characterize the best

jazz quartets arise from the careful listening and response each musician gives to the plane of the others.

It is that interaction inspired and encouraged by the quartet leader that leads to wonderful,

even inspired music.

And so should it be in business, close quote.

I've been thinking a lot about teamwork lately, team effectiveness, working together,

aligning yourselves in order to achieve a common goal.

And I think this is one of the best analogies that I've heard on great teamwork, being a master

of your instrument, a master of your craft, your competence, yet being a subordinate

to the group, listening, jiving with, harmonizing with everyone on the team, which leads to

inspiring music, music that you could not create alone. And so my question to you is, what can you do to be a

better teammate? What can you do to align yourself a little bit better with the vision of the team?

If you're a leader yourself, what can you do to help lead your team do this? What are you missing?

What do you need to start doing? What do you

need to stop doing in order to make this possible with whatever group you're with? It can be at work

on your team or even the most important team in my opinion, your family. We always talk about

winning at home. This even works in relationships, familiar family relationships as

well. And so my question to you once again is what can you do to be a better musician? What can you do

to be a better teammate? Think about it, chew on it, and then take it from there. Have a great day
