Good morning. Welcome to the Increasing Impact Podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode 1,791. I recently read that Tim Ferriss asked Jerry Seinfeld, what would be some of the components if you were to teach a class on how to become a great writer or comedian or actor or whatever. Jerry Seinfeld said this. I would teach them to learn to accept

0:25.1

your mediocrity. You know, no one's really that great. You know who is great? The people that just

0:32.5

put a tremendous amount of hours into whatever they do. It's a game of tonnage, you know? How many hours

0:40.8

are you going to work per week, per month, per year? You might even want to chart that, close

0:48.7

quote. What I love about it is he said to embrace mediocrity. Know that you're not that great.

0:57.2

And very few people are really great at what they do.

1:00.2

But the people who are great are the people who put a ton of time into it.

1:06.8

How much are you willing, how much time are you willing to put in?

1:11.4

How good do you want to be?

1:13.1

And then you have to understand what is it going to cost?

1:15.9

And one of the things is going to cost is your time, your attention, and your effort over a long period of time.

1:25.1

And then you got to ask yourself, are you willing to pay that price? Are you willing

1:28.6

to pay the price to be great? And the very end of this quote is what I like. You might even want to

1:36.0

chart that. I remember recently hearing somebody talk about quantifying preparation, quantifying the work that they put in.

1:50.9

And that's what Jerry Seinfeld means by charting it. Could you imagine that every time you

1:56.1

poured in your craft, every time you worked at something, every book you read, every time you did

2:01.3

something to get better, you put a little tally mark up, or you put a little markup or put a little

2:05.9

X on the calendar. And then you were able to chart it. You're able to see your progress. You're able to

2:10.9

see the amount of time you put into that. And any doubts that creep in, any negativity that

2:17.3

creeps in trying to challenge you or accuse you of not working hard enough, you'll be able to look at that chart and look at those metrics and look at the time and say, no, I did put a lot of work into this.

2:32.4

And so my question to you is this. What is something in your life

2:37.5

that you have put a ton of time into, a ton of time into and have reaped the benefits of it?
