Today's story comes from Morgan Housel and he recounts a story from the book crashing through

where he tells the story of Dr. Dan Goodman who performed eye surgery on this woman that allowed her to see.

She went from completely blind to being able to see.

It was an incredible success.

Now, the book crashing through writes about this interaction between the two when she came

back for her checkup.

Her reaction startled the doctor and she was really happy

before she was cured. She was living her life. She was doing things that she wanted to do, but

something really interesting. The doctor said, how are you now? And now that she's able to see,

she became anxious and depressed.

She told the doctor that she'd spent her entire adult life on welfare. She'd never worked.

She was never married. She didn't go far from home. She had a small existence, but she was very

comfortable. But now, government officials are telling her that she no longer qualifies for disability.

She's expected to go get a job.

Society wants her to function normally.

And she ended up telling the doctor that this was too much to handle.

The very thing that she wanted more than anything

ended up being something that stressed her out tremendously.

And it leads to the line that Morgan ended with.
