In this episode, I am speaking to We Are Bridges author Cassandra Lane. We Are Bridges is a memoir that is

about Bert Bridges, who is Cassandra Lane's great-grandfather. In 1904, in Holmesville, Mississippi,

his wife, Mary, so Cassandra's great-grandmother, was pregnant with

their first child, and this is also the year that he was lynched. In the book, Lane speculates

that the reason he was hung from a tree to die was because he did not want to sell his land to the mayor or white men in Mississippi.

So Lane never knew her great-grandfather. She did know her great-grandmother, Mary. However, she

died when Lane was 11. But growing up, she had only heard little bits and pieces about her great-grandfather

and what had happened so many years ago.

When Lane was 35, she was pregnant and she started to research her family history
