Summary

Todd Aydelotte is considered a “Historical Ultrarunner”. He runs ultra-marathons that follow the paths of historical people and significant events. From running to the important locations of Edgar Allen Poe’s life to the locations of a series murders committed by a serial killer, Todd is fascinated and moved (literally) by history.

In today’s conversation, we’re talking about Todd’s annual underground ultrarun that he organizes; The Warriors Ultra-Run. One his website, it’s described as “an overnight running experience that carries runners over 28 miles as they recreate the escape route from the iconic 1979 film by Walter Hill. After attending a 1 AM Conclave, held at a secret location in the Bronx, runners dressed as gang members pass iconic shooting sights as they race for Coney Island”

Hey folks, welcome to the adventure sports podcast. I'm your host Mason. Today's story, we're talking to Todd Aid a lot, and Todd considers himself a historical

0:22.7

runner, an ultra runner, an ultra runner. And what that means is, you know, he's going to say this.

0:30.3

He doesn't live in the mountains of Colorado and can reach enlightenment that way. He has to work

0:35.1

with what he has in New York City. And what does New York have

0:38.5

that a lot of places might not have is tons and tons of history, important American history.

0:44.9

And so Todd has developed a style of running where he studies a subject like someone's life,

0:50.6

like Nikolai Tesla or Edgar Allan Poe, or a subject like slavery or the locations of a serial killers acts and acts as an A-C-T-S, not A-X-E, by the way.

1:04.9

And he will basically create a route, a running route that goes to these locations, whether it be their

1:12.9

homes or significant events that happened in their lives, and will put together a route where he can

1:19.6

then run and it ends up being 50 to 100 miles. And he says it's just so powerful to add this

1:27.1

layer of history to an adventure experience.

1:31.0

I've personally done something like this where I've biked to authors' homes,

1:34.9

like historical authors' homes.

1:36.3

And it was an adventure unlike any I had ever had because you were constantly reading

1:42.2

and learning as you went.

1:45.6

And it was almost like the effort you were putting in to get there made the information and the experience just sink in so much

1:51.8

more versus you know driving there or something so Todd is on to something here and I think it can

1:57.0

be a really really fascinating thing to add to your adventure is the historical element.

2:02.1

Obviously, for a lot of us, we're already interested in the history of a place we might be

2:06.3

going to. But Todd says making it a focus of the adventure can really elevate the experience.

2:13.7

So I think he's on to something. But the adventure we're talking about specifically today is the Warriors Ultra Run.

2:20.7

It's an event that he plans every year that's actually a group event.
