Summary

It’s Christmas time, and we all have expectations this season. Some are material—what gifts are we going to receive? What experiences are we going to have? Some are relational—will we finally get engaged? Will the grandbabies be visiting? Expectations are fine as long as we manage them instead of letting them manage us. If we’re not careful, unmet expectations can turn us into people we don’t want to be. Who do you want to be during the holidays? In this episode, two women–Elizabeth and Mary–are going to give us an incredible, real-life, non-sugar-coated example of who we can be this holiday season. We find them in Luke chapter 1, right before the first Christmas. At their meeting, we see their mutual joy in being in each other’s presence because of God’s work in their lives. These women show us it’s a gift to be in community without jealousy, to bless other people with our words and welcome them into our hearts. When we remember Christmas isn’t about us, we find enduring joy. There’s nothing better than going into this season with Jesus as Savior and Lord of our lives. I hope that you are in the full swing of things and that this is a good and celebratory time for you. I know that that is not always the case for every single person going through this particular season. And so today is going to be intensely practical. I really want to look at scripture today and to draw out some
1:21.6	things that I think will really help us as we head into this wonderful but sometimes really difficult season of the year.
1:31.8	And if you happen to be listening to the podcast and let's say it's closer to July 4th than
1:37.0	Christmas, that is totally fine. Maybe you are going back and you are listening from the
1:41.9	beginning or making your way through past cultivate episodes,
1:45.5	and this will be completely relevant. Everything that we're going to look at today applies to
1:50.8	our lives all the time, but I would say specifically during this particular season, because
1:56.7	I know that the holiday season exacerbates whatever season of life we are already in.
2:04.5	So if it is a good time, the Christmas season tends to make that even sweeter, even better.
2:11.9	But if it is a difficult time that you find yourself in, sometimes that can also exacerbate that. The season can
2:19.5	exacerbate that difficulty. So it's Christmas time. We're going to jump in. This is going to be
2:25.6	encouraging. It's going to be practical. And we are going to see how two women, Elizabeth and Mary,
2:33.2	found incredible joy in their savior, but also in one another,
2:38.1	and how they, even though, I was going to say, how they made it through the first Christmas,
2:42.9	but really it's kind of, we're going to find them right before the first Christmas.
