Summary

A new year comes with much to do, plan for, and be excited about. But, at the start of these 365 days, it’s important that we take time to position our hearts before the Lord. It’s easy to focus on all of the doing, but what if we focus on the being—being at the feet of Jesus and listening to what He has to say to us? When we spend time with Him, our serving and productivity will flow out of that time.  In this episode, we’re looking at Mary and Martha’s encounter with Jesus in Luke 10:38-42. He called them to a place of discipleship and a posture of choosing quality time with Him as superior to being anxiously busy for Him. Jesus invited these two sisters, as he invites us, to a deeper communion with Him. He said that this is the better choice because time spent with Him can never be taken away. Don’t we want to be about the things that can never be taken away from us?  We don’t know what the year ahead holds, the hard times and the good times, but the quality time we invest with Jesus today is treasure stored for tomorrow. At the end of these 365 days, I want to have stored up something special. I want Jesus to look at our lives—our love for Him and for others, the time that we spend with Him and the time that we give to others—and say, “That is a treasure.”  January is the perfect time to start a Bible study. Check out Kelly’s newest study, Ruth: Loss, Love & Legacy (video access included with study),and also her study, Encountering God, which is about the spiritual disciplines—a great focus for the new year.  Cultivate is brought to you in part by the Dwell Bible App. Save 30% at dwellapp.io/Cultivate. Yeah. Access more. Welcome to the Coltivate Podcast. I am Kelly Mentor, and I just want to say, happy new year. We are at the top of a year,

1:16.0

and this can be a little overwhelming, but it's also, I think, really exciting. I love that the Lord built into our world, these rhythms of seasons, and in years. So we have the opportunity every 365 days to take a deep breath, reflect on what God has done in the year prior and his

1:24.9

faithfulness in our past year, and also look forward. Now, the thing for me,

1:30.1

though, this time of year is so often we begin to think of all the things that we want to do,

1:36.6

right, all that we want to accomplish the way, the things, the goals, the resolutions,

1:42.9

things we want to be different this year than last year.

1:46.7

And it can start to get busy and overwhelming, especially if you're one of those people.

1:52.4

I don't do this, but I love it. If you are one of those people that likes to make a list and

1:57.0

likes to have a plan for that year and goals, it can just get really busy, and it can be a lot

2:01.9

more about doing than being. And doing is great. As believers in Jesus, we are called to do a lot of

2:10.2

different things. But today I want to start this year and start with a passage that I hope will be a

2:17.1

little bit of a counterbalance

2:18.6

to the busyness and will focus on the being, if you will. I really want us at the top of the

2:26.3

year to make our time with the Lord a priority. This time that we take with the Lord a major priority, because when we have that right,

2:37.7

Matthew in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, he talks about seeking the kingdom of heaven and the

2:43.3

righteousness of the Lord first. And when we have that priority first and right, then everything
