Summary

This week we’re looking at the spiritual discipline of service. Serving others and looking outside of ourselves is just good medicine. But if you’re anything like me, when you’re tired, discouraged, or feeling hopeless, the last thing you want to do is think about how you can help others. We want to turn inward, not outward. But Jesus constantly modeled giving His life away for others and He never lacked joy, peace, or contentment.  I couldn’t be more excited to have my pastor and friend, Jeff Simmons, on the podcast today. He is one of the most servant-hearted people I know. We’ll be unpacking Matthew 20:20-28 where Jesus talks about what it means to be great in His kingdom—and, no surprises, it has to do with being a servant. Jeff and I will share from the heart and give practical examples of what it looks like to serve others in our modern, busy world. This episode is a breath of fresh air you don’t want to miss.  Sign up at Lifeway.com for the Encountering God Online Bible study, starting January 13, 2022. I am so excited because I am sitting here with someone very special, one of my dearest friends, but also someone who is meant so much to me in my

1:02.7

spiritual life. And I'm going to tell you who it is in just a second. But before that, I just want to

1:07.6

remind you that we are in a very special series on the spiritual disciplines.

1:14.1

So I've talked a little bit about this, but I'm really excited.

1:16.7

This is kind of a celebratory time because I have written a Bible study on the spiritual

1:22.7

disciplines called Encountering God, cultivating habits of faith through the spiritual disciplines. And each week,

1:29.5

we take one general spiritual discipline. Sometimes the weeks have a few, and we work through them

1:36.2

through scripture. And so today, I am pumped because we are going to be looking at service.

1:41.3

Now, some of you might be thinking, oh, that just doesn't really hit a felt

1:45.2

need for me today. Like I was hoping that you were going to say we're going to talk about, you know,

1:49.9

the spiritual discipline of just prayer or drawing closer to the Lord in solitude. And we were touching

1:55.8

on all of those and that's great. But we are called to give out of ourselves, to pour out of ourselves. And I don't

2:02.7

want to give too much away. But we even see in today's scripture and in our discussion that

2:07.6

this is really what it means to be great in the kingdom of God. And it is so fulfilling. So I have

2:14.1

sitting across from me, and this is so exciting for me and very personal, my pastor, Jeff Simmons, and Jeff, you're not just my pastor, but you're also a dear friend of mine.
