Today we'll be telling the story of St. Ignatius of Loyola, whose feast is celebrated

on July 31st.

St. Ignatius was born in Spain on October 23rd, 1491 as the youngest of 13 children.

As a child in youth he was completely obsessed with the military and the idea of being famous.

He loved reading stories of knights and chivalry and aspired to military greatness.

He joined the army at age 18 and fought in many battles before becoming

severely injured by a cannonball when he was only 20 years old. His right leg

had been shattered by the cannonball and many surgeries were required to set

straight again. During his time in the hospital, St. Ignatius read the lives of the

Saints and became inspired to imitate the Saints instead of Knights.

Saint Ignatius went on to form the Jesuit order

and wrote a well-known spiritual classic

called the Spiritual Exercises.
