Lausel and Montgomery here with the exciting conclusion

to the once-over we're giving to the controversial life of Dai Li.

We left off in part two with Dai suffering a crushing setback

after uncovering a communist spy ring in the most sensitive part of his intelligence empire.

In March 1940, he learned of its existence,

and after he plugged that massive hole in his MSB,

or military investigation and statistics bureau,

he was determined to never let that happen again.

The head office of the MSB was located in the south of Chongqing

in a district called Wang Mengman.

This was a name that ran a chill up and down the spine

of anyone familiar with the goings-on in that place.

As the 1940s dawn, Dai Li's MSB was running a whole

constellation of concentration camps around China

that housed all manners of enemies of the state.

And that was a pretty wide umbrella in the early 1940s,

and it's unknown how many people ended up inside one of those things.

In these prison camps, those who had been unfortunate enough

to have been rounded up went through a harsh regimen of brainwashing.
