Hello and welcome to this solo episode of the ESG Fitness podcast. The reason it's solo is

0:08.8

because the audio was so bad on the one I did with Andy last week that I had to actually take

0:15.1

it down and put it back up and it was still pretty bad. So we are awaiting a microphone to record that and I'm going to wait until we have that

0:26.8

in order to answer questions from check-ins this week because I think it's good to get at least two

0:33.3

points of view and discuss them with someone else a little bit. Plus, Andy always has great things to say.

0:39.7

And often sees things from a different perspective than me.

0:43.0

So I think that is a really useful thing to do.

0:46.6

So I'm just going to talk about a few things that I've read this week that I found

0:50.8

really interesting.

0:51.9

So the first thing was a study on how we see our future

0:57.7

selves and actually how we see them as complete strangers. And this is one of the reasons that we

1:05.7

struggle to do things now that we would be grateful for in the future. So one of the things I often say is,

1:13.1

you know, do something today that your future self will be thankful for. And one of the reasons

1:17.1

that we don't do that is because we don't see our future selves as ourselves, if that makes

1:22.5

sense. And another reason is this sort of concept of delayed reward, which we've discussed before.

1:30.5

So I kind of want to focus on this future self problem, I guess, or disconnect.

1:38.8

So it's interesting because we will likely give time and money and effort to people that we love, but we won't, or even to strangers, you know, you might give someone on the streets some money, but you're very unlikely to give your future self something like that. God, that was a really bad example. I'm sorry, I apologize.

2:04.7

But I guess what I'm trying to say is that psychologists have found that there is this big disconnect

2:12.3

between how we see ourselves now and how we see ourselves in the future.

2:21.3

And to the extent that we actually see ourselves as strangers.

2:25.8

And this actually, actually, again, I'm going to stop saying actually.

2:28.7

I probably won't be able to stop saying it now that I've said it.
