Today we'll be telling the story of St Anthony of Padua, whose face is celebrated on June 13th.

St. Anthony of Padua was born on August 15th, 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal.

St. Anthony's parents were wealthy and he received a very good education. At age 15 he entered the

religious life and after being ordained to the priesthood was inspired to become

a Franciscan. In 1222 a group of Dominican friars were visiting the Franciscan Monastery where St. Anthony lived.

Each group of men thought that the other would be providing the homily, and was because of this mix-up that

St. Anthony was asked to speak. It was during that sermon that his gift

as a very talented preacher was discovered. In fact, towards the end of his life, crowds of

over 30,000 people would gather to hear his sermons. He even had to have a bodyguard sometimes,

so people wouldn't clip off pieces of his clothes to keep as relics.

He was a powerful and dynamic speaker with a fantastic knowledge of scripture.

St Anthony is also famous as the patron saint of lost or stolen items.

When St Anthony was in charge of teaching the no Novices, his precious book of Psalms, which was full of his notes for teaching and preaching, was stolen.

St Anthony prayed for the book to be returned, and sure enough a few hours later a student of his brought it to him.
