Summary

When I sat down to write The Mentor chapter of The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I thought I was going to reveal that The Mentor was the seat that has remained empty on my own life council. But as I wrote, I realized that I have had mentors along the way, women who have lit the path the ahead of me and shown me who I wanted to be. Chief among those is my friend Cyndi Finkle - a woman who so greatly influenced me when I moved to Los Angeles that I can trace so many of my decisions to her and her example. 0:00.0	When I was sketching out the 10 friendship archetypes for my book, The Life Council, 10 Friends
0:15.8	Every Woman Needs, I felt strongly that there should be a seat on one's life council
0:20.9	for a mentor. I felt this way even though I had long lamented that I didn't really have
0:27.2	a mentor or at least not the type of mentor that I was picturing that was largely professional.
0:33.0	Since I've been a freelancer virtually my entire adult life,
0:37.0	I started in film and television production when I was 22,
0:41.0	all the way through to now, in my work, in my 40s, as a writer and podcaster and creator,
0:48.7	this means that I have never really been on a traditional career track.
0:53.6	And the benefits of being a freelancer are that you get to make up your path as you go along,
0:58.8	and the downside to being a freelancer is that you have to make up your path as you go along.
1:04.0	So I love the independence and the uniqueness of my career,
1:07.1	but there have been many times that I have wished
1:09.7	that a boss-like figure would just like swoop in and tell me exactly what to do to advance my prospects.
1:17.6	So when I started to write this mentor chapter of the Life Council, I sat down thinking that I was going to write a section, like with a twist,
1:26.2	that I was going to write about how it was an important seat on the Life Council, but that I,
1:31.1	the Creator of the Life Council, had never filled it.
1:35.0	But as I wrote, I realized that I had in fact had multiple mentors
1:41.0	over the course of my life. Yes, even in adulthood, they just didn't fit into these
1:47.4	professional parameters that I was picturing. But I wrote about in my first book I wrote about in this book that there
1:54.3	have been many women who have been life mentors who have taught me how to be in
2:01.7	the world.
