Hi, this is Josh Marshall and this is the Josh Marshall podcast.

We are we're in a kind of a funny period right now in the in in 2021 in in the Biden presidency.

Joe Biden is a bra. I think he left yesterday on this foreign trip. If I have that right, so he's and I think that's the first

foreign trip, at least the first extension, extensive one and that gets it gets a president, you know, that's a that's a standard

president thing to do something they tend to like to do that it puts them, you know, uniquely in charge and as as

courtesy of America, they're a big cheese abroad, even when even when occasionally they're only a medium cheese at home.

So that's going ahead and yet we have had a number of for what are for most Democrats, some pretty negative, how can I put it?

You know, pretty negative developments or or things that seem very challenging that have come into greater focus over the last couple

weeks. The big one, of course, is is Joe Manchin put out this op-ed over the weekend in his main home state paper, basically saying he

will not vote for S1 H1 and that's for the people act, the big democracy protection bill that Democrats are very focused on to basically turn back the wave of voter

suppression bills that are, you know, moving through state houses around the country. There's also campaign finance reform stuff in there.

And to me, what is in many ways, perhaps the most important thing is redistricting reform, putting some limits on extreme

gerrymandering. But myself, I and I hesitate to say this because I, you know, this will get me in a bunch of arguments.

I have never seen campaign finance reform as really at all in the same universe of importance as these other other things.

People may differ. In any case, I think I made this point month or so back and one of the big activists on this issue got in touch with me

and sort of explained why I was wrong and all this kind of stuff. But the one thing that that person told me, which I think is is is pretty

relevant is that almost for no one is the finance is the campaign finance stuff to hold up on H1 S1. No one is saying like, Oh, yeah, yeah, we do all this other stuff.
