0:32.3	The town of Escalante, Utah was first founded by Mormon settlers back in the 1870s.
0:38.8	By 1934 the town was already five years into the Great Depression and poverty
0:44.4	was rampant. This band of a few short years the town was struck by a wave of
0:50.8	misfortune that was positively biblical. From the depression to a plague of
0:56.0	grasshoppers destroying all the crops followed by the worst drought the
1:00.1	stated scene in 80 years. So when on a chilly November morning a stranger
1:08.1	rode into town in the back of a tiny burrow. The locals were naturally
1:12.4	curious and saw him even more than a little suspicious. He came from the west
1:18.7	leading a second burrow packed with camping gear. He was handsome and he wore a
1:24.4	floppy hat and a pailer and shirt that fluttered in the wind. The 20-year-old man
1:31.5	from California was named Everett Roos. He told some of the locals he'd been
1:36.7	wandering across the southwest for the past five years. He said he was an
1:42.2	artist and that he'd been traveling the land looking for inspiration for his
1:45.9	work. Some of the young boys from Escalante took a shine to the stranger
1:51.0	immediately. He was something exciting and different in the humdrum little town
