Summary

Back during the start of the 20th century, the Gilded Age gave way to the Progressive Era as immigrant labor was forced to work long hours in terrible working conditions. This all came to a head on March 25, 1911, when a fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York's Lower East Side, killing 146 people. It was one of the greatest tragedies in the history of America. 0:39.8	1903 the 43-year-old mother suffered from some sort of attack that caused her to
0:44.0	be bedridden. The doctor that examined Mary couldn't figure out what was
0:49.2	causing her pain. He administered some stimulants which eased her pain for a
0:54.6	bit. But soon after he left Mary's condition began to grow worse. From there
1:01.5	she's grew steadily weaker before Mary just died. It was only after an autopsy the
1:09.8	doctors were able to locate the root cause of what had killed Mary-Hality.
1:15.0	Somehow two pieces of corset steel each measuring eight and three-quarters
1:20.6	inches long had become lodged in the woman's heart. No one knows how they got
1:28.0	there or how long they had been there. But this incident does illustrate just how
1:34.2	hazardous women's fashions for more than a century could be. And why the style of
1:39.7	what women wore was forced to evolve out of some very outdated and dangerous
1:45.0	sensibilities. If you've ever seen a movie or TV show set in the 18th or 19th

1:57.1	gowns with the massive crinolins, the narrow waistlines often accompanied by
