Summary

Harsh truth time..

You’re not burnt out because you are working too hard.

It’s the not setting boundaries, not coming off social media and doing low level, low productivity work constantly that is burning you out.

You aren’t working too hard you are working for too long with zero out put. You’re ‘working’ all the time but you never actually focus and quite frankly your productivity is shit.

It is like trying to build muscle by doing 100s of body weight squats rather than actually lifting some weight and creating an adequate stimulus for growth… and then resting and recovering so that growth can occur.

The idea behind rest, recovery and adaptation is that you are able to come back and work harder.. not that you work less hard.

It is easy to fall into the trap of long hours and achieving very little. But you feel like you’re hustling because you’ve been on your laptop from 6am to 11pm. This is almost bred into us given how we are usually paid - for time not productivity.

Sure, you might be burnt out but it’s not because you’re working too hard.

And anyway, it’s not really about working harder, I am not telling you that you need to work harder… it’s about working smarter.

- Make a plan
- Set time
- Set boundaries
- Turn off the internet
- Have defined tasks/ a to do list

& do some focused work without distractions.

You will be amazed how much you get done in an hour if you turn your phone/the internet off and actually focus.

That way you will get more and higher quality work done AND have time to switch off/ relax.

I would love to know what you think: @ESGfitness

I should not have started the podcast like this.

0:05.8

Why would I press record and then put satsuma in my mouth?

0:10.1

Here is some ASMR satsuma eating.

0:14.3

I hope that was enjoyable.

0:17.3

Okay.

0:20.3

Okay, sorry. Welcome to the podcast. Today I just wanted to do a little solo episode because there were things I have been thinking about. So this little thought process and examples that I'm going to talk about today were inspired by a tweet that has been doing the

0:40.0

rounds the last day or so. And the tweet is that we need to stop glamorizing, overworking,

0:47.4

the absence of sleep, good diet, exercise, relaxation and time with friends and family

0:51.8

isn't something to be applauded. Too many people where they're

0:56.5

burnt out as a badge of honour and this needs to change. Now, I agree with this to some extent. So obviously,

1:04.8

I think that sleep, good diet, exercise, relaxation, spending time with friends and family is massively important. But the issue I

1:14.6

have with this is I don't think that it comes from overworking. In fact, I don't think we're

1:21.0

burnt out because we're overworking. I think we're burnt out because we end up working long hours

1:27.4

with very little productivity.

1:30.3

And part of that is the way that we're paid or the way that most people are paid.

1:35.3

And the way that most people are paid is that they are paid for their time, not for their productivity,

1:40.3

or not for the amount of work they produce.

1:45.5

And it's very hard to do this in some situations.

1:48.3

But in many situations, it could be done.

1:50.6

It's just still not how we work.

1:52.3

So, for example, I was talking to my flatmate, who is the manager of a hotel.

1:57.6

And I was saying that, oh, you could, you know, wouldn't it be more incentive if you could say to the housekeepers, you know, once you've cleaned all the rooms and done all your work, you can go home?
