Hey, guys, welcome to not another anxiety show. I'm your host, Kelly Walker, and joining me today is guest, Joanna Nyland. Hi, Joanna. Hi, Kelly. Thanks so much for taking time to a hop on the

0:23.3

show today. And thank you for having me. I'm really pleased. Great. Now do you mind telling us

0:29.2

a little bit more about yourself, especially your recent publication? Oh, sure. Yeah. So my name is Joanna Nyland, and I'm a journalist slash

0:41.8

translator and writer and photographer doing a little bit of everything. I live in Helsinki in Finland,

0:48.9

I'm married to Johnny, who's a teacher. And I do quite a bit of my journalistic work in English because I studied

0:57.4

English literature at university and I work for a few publications in the UK and also some magazines

in Finland. And now, that's my most recent project, I've written a book about this Finnish

1:25.2

Finns and how we think. Yeah. So in short. And, you know, I just

1:33.0

recently learned about Sisu. I came across it in a BBC article about a month ago. And I thought

1:40.2

it was incredibly interesting, no doubt applicable to those of us working through

1:44.8

anxiety.

1:45.5

So I just started Googling for Sisu experts and happened to find you.

1:50.6

Got to thank the internet for that, right?

1:52.6

Yeah, that's great.

1:54.2

That's really cool.

1:54.9

And, you know, I guess my first question in reading about Sisu is, is it a concept, a philosophy, a verb? What is it?

2:06.6

What is Sissu? Well, it's kind of all things rolled into one, but I would say it's a concept,

2:12.6

first and foremost, and it's something that's been part of the Finnish language for at least 500 years as an idea.

2:20.3

And it stands for a whole cluster of different traits, just like courage and determination and resilience.
