It's also where geniuses live.

New thoughts don't generally originate in the middle of mainstream consensus.

That's where seasonal Starbucks drinks come from.

Sitcoms with Laugh Tracks, Buzzfeed Listicles about things only 90 kids. 90s kids will know. That stuff comes from the

cool kid table all grown up. Major shifts in paradigms, game changers, and of course entire lakes of crackpot ideas. Those are on the

outer banks of society. And there's a third group who abodes in that distant twilight as well.

Monsters.

In addition to savants and cranks, there are truly repugnant individuals who live at the frayed edges of civilization.

And you can respond in two ways to that murkiness.

You can either ignore it and try and stamp it out, or put on your

Wellington boots and go see what lurks in the mist.

The new right, a journey to the fringe of American politics by Michael malice is a plunge into

the intellectual shadowlands.

I enjoyed it tremendously for two reasons.

First, it is always beneficial to learn a new way of thinking,

even if you don't ultimately agree with it.

Whenever you become fluent in a different worldview you automatically become smarter and you see the fault lines and your own beliefs which were hitherto invisible.
