I'd like to get married soon.

Ideally in two or three years ago.

Being a bachelor at 35 is less fun than you might suspect.

It's kind of like being stuck in a vestibule between more substantial stages of life.

The big perk is that I can have sex with various people inside that vestibule,

and also I am the undisputed sovereign monarch of the toilet seat.

But I'd be willing to engage in a power sharing agreement and probably even monogamy to begin life with a committed partner.

Let's assume I managed to pull this off at some point and successfully trick a woman into marrying me.

When that happens, where does the validity of our marriage come from?

Is it the state? Is it God? Or is it from the

professional Elvis impersonator who officiates the ceremony.

Since I'm not religious or a knee-bending statist,

I think the meaning of the relationship

comes from the two people in it, and not an external authority.

I realize that's different for devout people who are engaging in a sacrament,

but either way, I would definitely rank the state lower on the totem pole of

marriage authority than the unlicensed Elvis impersonator I will one day hire.

The reason I bring all of this up is because Alabama just passed legislation to get rid of

marriage licenses.

The governor can and probably will sign that bill shortly,
