Summary

Are you aware of diet culture infiltrating safe spaces like school or church? Everyone is on a journey of their own. I want to make sure that as we talk about the impact of diet culture in the church, that we do it from a place of love, kindness, grace, health, and healing. I believe that we can have meaningful conversations around the topic of weight by: Being receptive to the needs of others Extending grace and not shaming or judging others Considering everyone’s individual circumstances Friends, as you continue to walk with God, remember that He is compassionate and gracious. Ask Him to guide you as you grow in relationship with Him and learn to separate yourself from diet culture. Food is a gift from God!  Tag me @biancaolthoff and @leslieschilling and let us know how this conversation has transformed your mindset around food. Takeaways Diet culture has infiltrated the church and made it an unsafe place for discussions about body image and health. The 'body as a temple' verse has been misused to shame and judge others based on their appearance. Fasting can be practiced in a healthy and holy way, but it is important to consider individual circumstances and avoid harmful behaviors. Alternative fasting options, such as abstaining from social media or comparison, can be just as meaningful and impactful. Self-discipline should be redefined as honoring hunger and taking care of our bodies, rather than pursuing a specific body size. Toxic detoxes should be avoided, and emotional eating should be addressed with the help of therapy or other forms of support. ⋇ Convoy of Hope - Empowering Women and Girls Together Donate here ⋇ Order Bianca’s new book GRIT DON’T QUIT ⋇ The Grit Don’t Quit Bible Study is now available. There really are no scales in the Bible for measuring bodies.

There are scales for measuring the misery of Job, which I jokingly say, like, could that be

The afternoon, we started talking about the scale and how the scale can really be damaging. But I'm going to make it a little personal.

Maybe you are not a person of faith, but you listen to the podcast.

You are still invited to this conversation because it is high time that we tell on ourselves.

We as a church culture, without even realizing it, have perhaps made

0:55.6

a place like church, a sacred place, perhaps unsafe. And it's unsafe because we want to talk about

1:02.7

what scripture says, but do it without shame that comes so much with diet culture. So I'm joined

1:08.6

again for this entire week with Leslie Schilling, nutrition therapist

1:13.6

and registered dietitian as we are getting wrecked. Leslie, thank you for being on the show.

Thanks for having me. It's good stuff. Okay. So we're going to get into the nitty gritty of church

and where we see this kind of like pop up everywhere. So hating our bodies

is a collective issue that so many people can wrestle with. We mentioned this at the end of
