Summary

The body is an amazing creation that provides an internal navigation system for helping us navigate what is useful and what is dangerous. It gives us physical clues (sensations) and emotional clues (emotions). Today I want to challenge you to really tap into what's going on and ask yourself whether it's a sensation or an emotion.

Hey everybody, welcome to Episode number 134. This is a topic that I've been thinking a lot about

0:31.8

for my own personal growth and development lately and I'm finding there's so much power

0:38.2

in thinking about these two concepts, really understanding them and thinking about what's really going on for me.

0:43.4

So I'm super excited to teach you guys about this topic today, but come on, am I ever not excited about it?

0:49.4

I'm always excited about it. All right, let's talk about sensations to begin with. A sensation starts in the body

0:59.8

and then it travels to the brain. It tells your brain, hey, there's something going on here in the body

1:07.4

that we need to solve for or that we need to pay attention to. Sometimes sensations feel really good, right?

1:14.4

The sensation of sexual pleasure. There's other sensations that we experience that feel really good, getting into a warm bath.

1:21.6

I love that sensation. It starts in my body, travels to my brain and I think, oh, this feels good. I love this hot bath.

1:29.6

There are other sensations that don't feel good, right? That are again a problem that the body is telling the brain we need to solve for.

1:38.8

Hunger is probably the main one that comes to mind. My stomach maybe starts to feel light, maybe my head, maybe there's an emptiness and a grumbling and an uncomfortableness

1:49.2

and that travels to my brain and tells me I need to eat something. That is a sensation. Another sensation would be fatigue.

1:58.4

Overall, everything in my body starts to feel tired. My muscles don't want to function. My eyes maybe get dry.

2:05.4

Maybe my head, again, we all experience things slightly differently, but a sensation like fatigue starts somewhere in the body and then travels to my brain and says I really want to go to sleep.

2:16.4

Now, emotions on the other hand start in the brain and then travel to the body. So an emotion would be something like sadness.

2:28.4

It starts in my brain in the form of a thought. A thought like this is sad. This is disappointing. I wish this hadn't happened. This seems so unfair.

2:40.4

And then it releases, my brain releases a chemical that vibrates through my body and I feel that in my body as an emotion and that's what we call sadness.

2:52.4

So that's the basic difference. Sensation starts in the body and travel to the brain, emotions start in the brain and travel to the body.
