On Tuesday, a demonic 18-year-old man named Salvador Ramos committed mass murder at an elementary school in Nouvelde, Texas, armed with two AR-15 assault rifles he purchased on his 18th birthday.

Ramos shot his grandmother in the base, drove his car into a ditch, and then went on a rampage.

At the reunification center in Uvaldi, Texas, not even holding their children could break parents' grief.

The massacre of 19 elementary school students and two teachers had even first responders seeking comfort.

The overwhelming loss of young lives,

prompting tears and anger.

As a new father, I cannot imagine the pain, the loss, the anger.

The parents of the 19 children who were killed must be feeling.

It is a national trauma, and sadly a familiar one, Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland, and now Ubalde.

School massacres are becoming a fact of modern life in America.

In moments like this, we crave an explanation and we crave a scapegoat.

Simply acknowledging that there is evil in the world and we cannot prevent all evil acts

unsettles us. We want to believe that with the right laws or procedures, we can prevent the next

Salvador Ramos or Adam Lanzah.

As a nation, we have to ask, when in God's name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?

When in God's name, we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done, I am sick and tired of it.

We have to act. And don't tell me we can't have an impact on this carnage.

I spent my career as a senator and a vice president working to pass common sense gun laws.

We can and won't prevent every tragedy, but we know they work and have positive impact.
