Episode Notes:

Emotional Monitoring – This is the tendency to continually monitor the emotional states of others, while sacrificing attunement to one’s own emotional states.

If you find yourself emotionally monitoring, try to become aware of your emotions throughout the day. Remember you can’t control the emotions of others. Their behavior is not a reflection of who you are.

Hello everyone. Hi friends welcome back to Barb knows best the

0:18.0

podcast I am your co-host Michelle Marros and I am sitting across the table from my mother Barb and it's a great day

0:26.8

to be chatting with you mom I know I love it I'm Michelle hi everyone hi we're into the new year and it feels I don't want to say exhausting already but it just feels like it's a lot and I was talking with Michelle earlier this week and I was thinking this is kind of the trend of getting into a new year because I think there's so much on our mind, so much on our plates, so many expectations we have. So was thinking Michelle maybe we could do an

0:55.0

episode on expectations because I think we have very high expectations of ourselves

1:00.4

and especially something about going into a new year speeds up time speeds up our

1:06.2

expectation makes us feel like oh my gosh I've got to do this I've got to do that in

1:10.8

order to feel like you know I'm productive or that I'm accomplishing something or that I'm worthy, all the things that

1:16.8

start happening.

1:17.7

It just seems to be on overdrive I feel in January.

1:21.5

And then by February, maybe March, we're like,

1:23.4

OK, this is another year.

1:25.5

Let's figure out what to do.

So I think it could be interesting.

1:29.9

Yes, I agree.

1:32.0

I feel like we've done something on expectations but in this context that sounds great and to

1:39.1

your point about the new year it's funny because I sent you something the other day about I think like

1:46.1

astrologically this time right now mid- January is also like an opportunity to start a year. I was trying to

2:01.5

find it as you were talking but I got lost in the 8 million

2:04.3

text messages we send each other. That's true. But I think what I take from that is

2:11.5

it's never too late to start again or to decide to do something differently or

2:16.7

to start a new chapter because it's true this is a common theme for us where you know the end of a year beginning of a

2:27.8

new year feels very chaotic and it was extremely chaotic for us this year we were talking the other day where it was like did the
