Today, we're tackling a relatively untouched topic on the podcast.

Parenting.

Why parenting on a leadership podcast? Among your many roles as a leader, one of the most important (and difficult) relationships is parents and children. The truth is – whether biological, adopted, or spiritual children, we all are called to raise up the next generation.

The reality is – without deep inner work and awareness, parents always repeat exactly as they were parented. You will parent the same way unless you intentionally change your family pattern.

You’ve heard the Proverb, “Train up a child in the way they should go." (Proverbs 22:6) Emotionally healthy parenting says, “Train up a parent in the way he or she should go.”

Today is part one of a two-part series on the longest-lasting relationships you will lead in your entire life. This is for parents with kids of all ages - infant, adolescent, teenager, and adult.

Hi, everyone. My name is Pete Cousero. I want to welcome you today to the Emotionally Healthy

0:08.3

Leader podcast. Our topic is emotionally healthy parenting, a radical approach to a very,

0:17.4

to a difficult task, a very difficult task. And actually, this is going to be a two-part

0:21.7

podcast. And today I want to focus on really the core. And so if you're involved in

0:28.8

emotionally health discipleship, long enough, you realize that, oh, my goodness, this impacts

0:33.4

all of life. Nothing is exempt from it, whether it's preaching, whether it's church body life,

0:39.2

whether it is your money, whether it's teen development, whether it's supervision,

0:45.3

whether it's singleness, marriage, sexuality, defining success in your life as a child,

0:52.3

young adult, teen, you name it, the way you approach school,

0:55.4

everything's impacted by it. And so today we're going to go into a large theme, which is how

1:00.2

it impacts parenting. And really, it's a new operating system. And it totally transforms the

1:06.8

way we do parent. And so today I want to offer you a radical approach to really this very

1:12.9

difficult task of raising folks all through life, children. And so I'm not a parenting expert. I do

1:18.5

have four daughters, ages 29 to 39. And so Jerry and I have been through all the stages of

1:25.3

parenting, or at least most of the stages of parenting at this

1:27.6

point, from, you know, from babies to toddlers to small children, to tweens, the teens, and then

1:34.5

young adults, and then adults, and now two are married with their own children and we're grandparents.

1:40.3

And so each stage has its own challenges. But there are some common themes for every

1:47.0

stage. And that's what I'm going to focus on here in this podcast. Now, this is not meant to be a

1:51.2

comprehensive treatment of all that scripture says about parenting by any means. But what I do

1:56.5

want to offer you is a gift, which I believe is the contribution that emotionally held the

2:02.9

discipleship makes through this whole discussion of parenting, this challenging area. So I was asked,
