As you have probably heard by now, former president Trump has been indicted on federal charges.

The indictment has not yet been made public, but the alleged crimes reportedly include willfully retaining national defense secrets, conspiracy to obstruct justice and making false statements.

This is of course Trump's second indictment, but his first federal indictment, which is also a first for a former American president.

Also unlike the previous indictment, he's not being charged based on what appears to be a novel legal theory.

Former government officials have been repeatedly charged for such alleged crimes, most prominently maybe think of former CIA director David Patreus, who pleaded guilty to removing and retaining classified information while having an affair with his biographer.

Also news today, as we're just beginning to record, is reporting on a recording of Trump describing some of the documents that he took suggesting that he knew what he was doing and understood that the documents were indeed national secrets.
