Summary

Lorraine and Trish chat to author, journalist, podcaster and founder of ‘Failosophy’ Elizabeth Day about why midlife has become her prime time, teaching our teenagers the importance of failure and how great friends and a new husband bring joy to her forties. Plus: Does journaling really work? We put it to the test and the treats we’re looking forward to this spring.

Trish, I am deep in parents' evening for my son, A-levels, GCFEs, Mox, all of that, and

0:36.9

a terrible, a terrible thing happened. Obviously, you know, you get this set of

0:40.0

instructions from your children. You know, don't speak, don't breathe, don't wear

0:43.9

anything, don't make eye contact, don't mention personal names. I did once call my son

0:50.0

by his pet name in front of his English teacher, which was terrible. But again, it happened

0:54.6

again this week with his English teacher when we were talking about writing, and my son's

1:00.5

quite quiet, he was practically mute in this, and the English teacher said, well, you

1:05.3

know, obviously you can ask at home about writing because your mum does a lot of writing,

1:09.5

isn't she? She's a journalist, she's got things, and my son, he went red from the neck

1:16.3

up to the top of his head and said absolutely nothing. And afterwards, he said to me, you

1:22.5

can't come any more to parents' evening, that's it, it's over. But that slightly defeats

1:28.5

the purpose, isn't it? Well, I said, yeah, what will happen? It'll just be you and your

1:35.4

dad not saying very much, and I won't get any information. And I said, well, it does

1:39.6

get worse because obviously next week I'm going to your school to talk about careers

1:44.6

and getting into careers, and he said, well, don't talk about writing, I said no, I'm

1:48.5

talking to the boys about fashion and beauty. I think he's going to go into the witness

1:56.4

protection scheme. Oh, I think something like that. I mean, wait till he finds out, you

2:00.5

do a podcast, never mind the writing.
