Summary

Which are the companies that will rewrite the rules and help rebuild the economy in 2020 and beyond? The Spectator and Julius Baer have come together once again to celebrate creative entrepreneurship across the UK. On this podcast, The Spectator's business columnist Martin Vander Weyer talks to a panel of high profile judges from the business world about the finalists in the Midlands and the North East - from desks made out of honeycomb paper to batteries that can sustain entire fleets of electric buses.

Our guest judges on this occasion were all veterans of these Awards. Representing the Midlands, Clive Bawden is COO of past regional winner Warwick Music and has a hand in a wide range of entrepreneurial and social projects. From Yorkshire, Gordon Black is former chairman of his family’s manufacturing business, Peter Black, and an active venture capitalist. And from Newcastle, Caroline Theobald is chair of Northumbria University’s business school and founder of First Face to Face, which connects early-stage entrepreneurs to money and markets. Representing Julius Baer was Martin Cuthbert, head of region for the North East.

0:18.2	the Midlands and the Northeast. That's a rather curious piece of the map. It's a sort
0:23.7	of diagonal stripe of the map, but it takes in everything from the Midlands through the whole
0:28.3	Yorkshire and Humberside region right up to Newcastle and Northumberland up there. And we have
0:34.3	judges representing all parts of the area. So we have with us today
0:39.3	four judges. We have Caroline Fiebold from Newcastle, Gordon Black, representing Yorkshire, Clive
0:48.8	Borden from the Midlands, Martin Cuthbert of Julius Bear, who's the regional director across this whole region.
0:56.7	And myself, Martin van der Weir, I'm business editor of the spectator.
1:01.4	Before we talk about the finalists, we've got four to talk about.
1:05.2	I'm going to ask each of the judges to introduce themselves very briefly
1:09.1	and to say a word about how they see business life
1:12.8	in their particular part of the region at the moment. So let's start with you, Caroline.
1:18.0	Thank you. And it's lovely again to be part of this competition, Martin. Thank you. And thank you,
1:22.1	Julius Bear, too, for making it happen. I am a co-founder of a company called First, Face to Face. I'm also have a passionate
1:29.9	interest in business ethics and set up an initiative on business ethics in the North East.
1:34.9	And I'm the chair of Newcastle Business School at Northumbry University, amongst other things.
1:40.5	But I think that's enough. Business up here is very tough. I mean, we always go into
1:46.5	recession first. We always come out of it last. My business actually sort of focuses on young people,
1:52.7	and I'm just terribly worried about the tsunami of unemployment there's going to be as a result of
1:58.0	COVID, despite what the government has done, which is substantial,
2:01.8	obviously, you know, how they can continue to support businesses. As ever, during a pandemic,
