In the early morning hours of Monday, January 11, 1993, firemen in the town of Previs

and Mone, a small French village near the Swiss border, rushed to the scene of a massive fire.

This was the home of 38-year-old doctor Jean-Claude Roman.

John Claude was a local celebrity.

He was a renowned physician, but he was also a leading researcher at the World Health

Organization.

Firemen rushed to the scene.

But when they got there, they couldn't see any signs of life, so they didn't immediately

go inside.

Instead, they focused on trying to put out this blazing inferno. That's when

they realized there was someone inside that house, still alive desperately trying to signal for help.

They rushed in and found that that figure in the window had been Jean-Claude. He was badly burned,

but still clinging to life.

But his wife Florence and their two young children, Caroline and Antoine, were dead.

Eventually, their burned bodies were brought out and loaded into body bags.

Jean-Claude was rushed to the hospital in Geneva, across the border, where he was put into a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

But when police went inside that house and started to look around, they discovered something

even more sinister.

They discovered that John Claude's family had been killed before the fire started.

Caroline had been brutally beaten to death with a blunt instrument.

The children had been fatally shot.

Then rumors started to circulate in that small town
