It has a reputation as an upscale place to live with housing prices

to match. While Tim King and babysitter victim Sheila Srock came from families with more modest means,

they called Birmingham their home. The city of Birmingham is not known as a high crime area.

Murders are rare, which makes the events of 1976 and

1977 so shocking. Birmingham was safe. The community rarely saw any murders, but between

January of 76 and September of 77, there were three homicides. And as of this writing,

two of those three homicides are unsolved. There are some, like the Birmingham police back in 77, who told the Birmingham

eccentric newspaper that today's case, the murder of John McKinney, had nothing to do with the Oakland

County child killings. John McKinney was a 50-year-old man.

Why would police bring up the Oakland County child murders at all? So here we are. It's September

1977. The task force is still in operation. They know that the snow will fly in a matter of weeks, and if they

are going to locate and apprehend this killer, the clock is ticking. Monday, September 19, 77,

was a classic fall day in Michigan. A few clouds threatened rain, but temperatures were in the low 70s.
