Summary

Some people just don’t mind being a cheap date, and of all the names in Jonah Goldberg’s little black book, Eli Lake is probably the easiest catch. Nonetheless, listeners are in for a raucous good time, as Jonah and Eli jump straight in on their reevaluations of Iran, Donald Trump’s desired deal, Trump’s “own goals,” Eli’s upcoming history deepdive, the Bush family’s unfair legacy, elites, celebrity culture, envy, Michael Anton, immigration and culture, and whether we needed Trump in 2016.  Show Notes: —Eli’s podcast, Breaking History —Ken Pollock Remnant —Hannah Arendt Remnant —Eli’s interview with Michael Anton —Eli’s podcast on America’s 249th birthday —Calvin Coolidge’s Address at the Celebration of the 150th Anniversary —Laura Field Remnant —The Coddling of the American Mind —‘The Flight 93 Election’ —92NY Dispatch Event The Remnant is a production of The Dispatch, a digital media company covering politics, policy, and culture from a nonpartisan perspective. Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention.

0:18.0

Can you digger?

Greetings, dear listeners, this is Jonah Goldberg, host of the Remnant podcast brought to you by the Dispatch and Dispatch Media.

0:32.8

So yesterday we were like, you know, we got a hole on the schedule.

0:35.7

We got a someone who can come in and just sort of roll with the punches and chmooze and talk and cover a lot of the waterfront without me having to prepare overly for it. And I was like, this is a job for Eli Lake. And so we called Eli and he was available to do it. And the problem is, is that Eli and I can,

0:54.9

you might as well just put us down at Barney Greengrass with a plate of bagels or whatever

1:00.5

and we'll just start schmoozing. And so we're starting late because Victoria got mad at me

1:05.9

because we were just intellectual gossiping for 20 minutes. And then we're like, you know,

1:10.5

we actually have to record something. So we're going to get started here. Eli is a columnist for, what did your title be for free press? Columnist, reporter, podcaster for the free press. I do Breaking History. Yes. And the host of Breaking History, an excellent podcast. And I write for commentary, which I love. We all love commentary.

1:28.6

We all love John Podoritz.

1:32.0

We all love John Podortz in full.

1:33.9

The whole package.

1:36.2

Anyway, so you had no idea what we were going to talk about beforehand.

1:39.6

I had no idea what we were going to talk about.

1:40.8

But we're recording this on Wednesday, June 10th in the morning.

1:45.2

I'd just start with the Iran war, such as it is, the ceasefire war, some people are starting to call it.

1:51.3

I call it Schrodinger's ceasefire because it's simultaneously a war and not a war.

1:58.5

So as far as I'm aware, Nick Catoja was the first to use that,

2:01.0

because he used that the day of the first ceasefire. Oh, he did? Okay. I'm sorry. I accidentally, I did not know. No, it screams out Trottinger, right? Because it's, you know, I mean, you could also call it Roershocks at ceasefire. Sure, that's another, right. Anyway, so how are you feeling? You were fairly bullish the beginning, as were a lot of people, including me, to a certain extent, how are you feeling? First of all, I had a lot of faith that there was an Israeli plan to topple the regime and help the Iranian people transition, which is what I now think that might have been some wishful thinking. So I do think

2:35.3

there was such a plan. And I think that it was we now know from reporting from Maggie Haberman

2:39.8

and Jonathan Swan that elements of that plan at least, like arming the Kurds were scuttled by

2:45.6

Trump. And I'm not saying that arming the Kurds would have been the silver bullet. I just thought
