Welcome, everybody to soccer 101. My name is Taylor Rockwell, and this week it's time for an episode inspired largely by the MLS previews we did this week.

As I said this week, we did those previews.

There was a lot of chat about

front offices and the roles involved therein. And the longer we talked about it, the more I got

confused about who exactly does what and why. We've done a previous episode on how front offices

work in terms of global football and in terms of American sports as well. This time around,

we're going to spend hopefully not significantly long time discussing four positions and whether they are actually

different things, whether they can be used interchangeably. Graham Ruffin or Sporting Director and

General Manager, how you doing, my friend? Hello, Taylor Rockwell. How are you? I expected you might

be dressed as a sporting director for this episode. Ryan said earlier in the week that you were dressed as a cat burglar. I was maybe for today's

episode, I was maybe anticipating there seems to be a sporting director uniform. As I see it,

it's blazer over a sort of lightweight sweater, dark trousers, white trainers. That's the sport and

director uniform. So I thought you

might rock that. One thousand percent. Sometimes it is a like lightweight button up polo or polo,

like just the two button polo with the blazer. And then yes, the Southgate polo. The athletic

trainers are key. Like it does feel like that is the uniform. Like they have to be

business up top, but then still able to be on their feet and like on the move and make decisions quickly. I don't know why that has to be the look, but it is definitely the look of all of them. Is that what a technical director looks like too, or does he have on the track suit? Oh, that's a good question. See? I'm not familiar with what they get taught at technical director university, but like, yeah, maybe they would attract suit. Maybe it's a track suit with a blazer. Maybe they sort of split the two. But really, like, this episode is largely inspired by, I think on more than one occasion, and this is not a shot at Joe, but I've said, like, yeah, I think he's the sporting director, and Joe will say, like, oh, no, he's the general manager. And if I say he's the technical director, it might be a different thing entirely. And I'm not sure I ever fully understand who is what and why and what the differences might be. So, Graham, the purpose of today is to figure out if there are actual differences between certain positions and if there are differences, what they might be.

Do you feel prepared to answer such questions so that my head can stop hurting?

I mean, as prepared as I'll ever be.
