football, in which superstar players command astronomical fees and global adoration, there

exists a different kind of hero, the cult hero, the cult player. These remarkable individuals

capture the hearts of fans not through statistical dominance or marketing appeal, but for

reasons that go beyond simple, low-filled performance. It might be heroic physical output. It might be talking to squirrels. It might be that one goal in that one game or that one fight in that one game or those several fights over those several games. But their status as a cult figure is secured forever more. This week, we're talking cult heroes in soccer. What are they? Who are they? I feel weird that we've gone down this route. Graham, let's instead talk about cult footballers. They are not people who lead large groups of people to do very bad things.

They are instead people who are large groups of people to do very bad things.

They are instead people who are the subject of adoration for myriad reasons.

Yeah, so listeners will probably have heard that term cult hero before. And it's something

that I think is used pretty uniquely in soccer. Maybe there are some instances of it being

used in, I don't know, in other terms of entertainment or

music or whatever, or whatever. But when I hear cult hero, I think soccer. I'm sure that is not

just me. And it's usually like a positive thing as well. It's a weird term, a cult hero,

because I know in 2025 things have changed, cults usually bad things but yeah as I say

this is a this is a positive thing it's a term of endearment and what I love about the term and about

cult heroes is that there are cult heroes at all levels of the game and I think that's why it has

such resonance because Taylor as a my knightative fan, you'll have cult heroes.

I have them as a Sterling Albion fan, as a Scotland fan.

And it's not necessarily related to ability, although that is, that's maybe part of it on some level.

And I think what is key about a cult hero is, I was trying to nail down what, what's the difference between a hero and a cult hero.

And I think a cult hero is someone who is adored by a certain section of fans, but maybe

doesn't get widespread recognition.
