Summary

In an enlightening and spiritual hour, Oprah remembers one of the most profound moments of validation on The Oprah Winfrey Show: when Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison asked, "Do your eyes light up when your child walks into the room?" Plus, Oprah reveals why the highest grossing movie of all time, Avatar, directed by James Cameron, is the perfect example of validation. (Toni Morrison passed away in 2019 from complications of pneumonia.)

I'm Oprah Winfrey. Welcome to Super Soul Conversations, the podcast. I believe that one of

the most valuable gifts you can give yourself is time, taking time to be more fully present.

You know, for years on the Oprah show, I was really taking notes mentally, emotionally,

0:30.8

spiritually from all of our guests. And I had come to know probably after the first four,

0:37.0

five years of doing the show that there was a common thread or common denominator in the

0:42.0

who had written a book called Getting the Love You Want. And it really was about mirroring,

early 90s, what is the big lesson you've learned from the show? I would have said that

1:19.5

the common denominator in the human experience is that everybody just wants to be appreciated

1:25.9

or validated. That got clarified in such a way that the hairs on my head rose when

I heard Tony Morrison, who was on the show for The Blueest Eye, one of my favorite books

of all time. I chosen her for a book club selection yet again. And she said these words.

It's interesting to see when a kid walks in the room, your child or anybody else's child,

1:53.7

does your face light up? Or, and that's what they're looking for. When my children used

2:00.8

to walk in the room, when they were little, I looked at them to see if they had buckled

their trousers, if their hair was combed, or if their socks were up. And so you think
