So today we are continuing a little mini series I'm doing on oyster mushrooms because I'm fascinated by these little things

and if you haven't grown them yourself

I'm making the case that you should. So today's episode we're talking about

mushroom substrates and you might say what is a mushroom substrate well think about it you've got to grow

plants in something right soil for a lot of you hydroponic growing media and

nutrient solution for other people aquaponics for even other people.

Well, mushrooms, just like plants, need something to grow in and the something is mushroom substrate.

When it comes to oyster mushrooms, some of them

can grow in dirt, but they don't really prefer it

and they don't do very well in those situations.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going to list the five different mushroom

substrates you can consider for oyster mushrooms. And I'm going to go. substr be first we have

we have straw.

Shreaded straw is a great substrate for growing oyster mushrooms.

If you do decide to grow with straw you want

straw that's been run through a wood chipper or it's been driven over with a

lawnmower. Basically you want straw that's cut down to about one to three inches in length.
