I am Karen Hunter, and today I'm going to share with you a discussion I had with a woman.

Her name is Deborah Howard, a victim of incest, who also figured out a way to find her own humanity and those around us.

She did a book called Repairing the Quilt for Humanity, and we talk about her own personal

journey, but we also give some action items for people who are dealing with this very subject.

I think we all are in many ways. So take a listen.

There's been a lot of horrible things happening. People being ripped away from their families.

Folks are anxious. I had a couple of students who were DACA people who came here as babies and

are completely upended. And I don't know what to do about it but you know there's some things we can we can do

so I want to welcome to the show she's going to help us with this she's got a couple of books the

mystery of memory telling my truth standing my ground I think this might be a memoir and then

there's repairing the quilt of humanity which I'm really interested in a metaphor for healing

and reparation let me welcome to the show.

first of all. Let's go there because I think people are in dire need of this. So repairing the

quilt of humanity came about because when I look at any kind of oppression, and my main focus in that book is racism, it has a impact at three levels.

So there's the systemic level, right, in terms of economics, disparities in health care, etc.

Then there's the cultural level in terms of stereotypes.

And then there's the individual level in terms of stereotypes. And then there's the individual level

in terms of real psychological injury. And so I was trying to think of what's a metaphor that

shows that complexity. And the complexity being everybody has multiple social identities. So I thought

of a quilt because I do quilt. and it has three layers, right?
