Summary

Long considered a classic show, I decided to start off our November here on the Deadpod with this gem from 1972.. from November 19th in Houston Texas. While this tape does have some faults I think overall it is well worth a listen.. The band was originally scheduled to play this show with the Allman Brothers, but the tragic death of bassist Barry Oakley the prior week left them to fill the evening alone - and they more than did..

The opening 'Bertha' suffers from poor mixing but that clears up in time.. nice versions of Uncle, Sugaree and BIODTL follow but things heat up with a wonderful 'Bird Song'. A still relatively new 'Black-Throated Wind' is quite entertaining. Another highlight is one of the best versions of both 'Box of Rain' and 'Tomorrow is Forever'.. Of course the 20 minute long 'Playin' In The Band' is a highlight for any of us who enjoy the spaces the band explores..

0:16.2	of Houston Houston Texas November 19th 1972 so it's really a nice show. Very interesting shows quite long.
0:27.0	Of course it'll bust my quotas, but that's all right.

0:32.0	The band, actually the band was supposed to play with the Allman Brothers on this night, but the Alman's
0:36.4	canceled because Barry Oakley passed way very suddenly.
0:40.8	And so the band stayed on stage for over three hours, I think, all together.
0:45.0	We're going to hear set one this week and set two next week.
0:48.0	It starts out with the Bertha, the sound quality is not dialed in yet, but be patient, the rest of it gets better.
0:55.4	Me and my uncle follows, sugary, beat it on down the line, a spectacular bird song, follows that.
1:01.8	A very good black-throated wind
1:04.0	don't ease me in mexicali blues and then one of the best boxes of box of rain versions that you'll ever hear
1:10.0	followed by
1:11.0	probably the best tomorrow is forever.
1:14.0	A song that Jerry and Donna didn't do well together most of the time, but they did on this evening.
1:20.0	Big River Fellows and then a great China rider, a very jamming playing in the band,
1:26.6	and then they close that one with Casey Jones.
1:28.7	I think you love this one if you're a fan of 72 Dead, and I know I am.
