Hey from CNN, I'm Josh and Shana, with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, August 13th.

National Guard troops have hit the streets of Washington, D.C., with armored vehicles and

soldiers seen along the Washington Monument.

An army official told CNN that troops aren't expected to openly carry their rifles as they

patrol the streets.

CNN has been speaking to local residents about their thoughts on the increased police presence.

I love it. I think this is long overdue. I've been one of the national guards in this area for years.

Hire more police officers. Instead of, I'm quite sure the feds got something else better than they can be doing.

In the last few days, D.C.'s mayor Muriel Bowser has also shown conflicting opinions on the

federalized takeover. Yesterday, at a news conference, she seemed to welcome the extra police

support.

Right now, we have more police, and we want to make sure we're using them.

But later at a virtual town hall meeting, Bowser struck a stronger tone against President

Donald Trump.
