President Donald Trump wrapped up a call with his Ukrainian counterpart and European leaders

ahead of his Friday summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

After the meeting, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters,

the Europeans made it clear,

Ukraine must be at the table at the next round of negotiations.

Here he is through a translator.

We want things to go in the right sequence.

We want to ceasefire at the very beginning, and then a framework agreement must be drawn up.

If Ukraine is prepared to talk about territorial negotiations, then we need to make sure that there are no violent changes to the border.

Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky, agrees, and he says he believes Putin is bluffing about the impact of sanctions.

We have to combine the negotiations with the pressure against Russia.

Sanctions should be strengthened if Russia will not go for ceasefire in Alaska.

Trump has said he believes both sides will have to give up some land in order to reach an agreement on ending the war.
