Hi from CNN, I'm Josh and Shana with the five things you need to know for Friday, October 3rd.

The government shutdown has entered its third day, and there's a strong chance it will continue into next week.

The U.S. Senate will reconvene in the coming days to hold another vote on the Republican short-term spending bill,

but Democrats are expected to vote it down, as they did earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the White House is threatening mass federal layoffs, which White House press secretary

Caroline Levitt said yesterday would be in the thousands.

Here's CNN's Renee Marsh, with more on the strategy behind these job cuts, which is led by Russ Vaux of the Office

of Management and Budget.

Vote announced on social media that nearly $8 billion in funding for what he calls

the green new scam, which was funding for clean energy projects in Democratic-led states,

had been canceled.

It's worth pointing out what is different from what we have seen in shutdowns in the past

is that the president is out front and center, not necessarily negotiating an end to the shutdown,

but instead saying that he'd use it as a, quote, unprecedented opportunity to essentially

make things painful for Democrats and hollow

out the federal workforce and eliminate programs that he doesn't like.

Several colleges and universities in the U.S. are being asked to make some policy changes

in exchange for federal funding.

The White House is asking nine major institutions to sign on to a series of demands,

an unprecedented effort by the government to force higher education to fall in line with President

Donald Trump's agenda.
