MLB Hall of Famer, three time World Series champion, eight time All Star, first pick in the 1980 MLB draft by the Met's Darryl Strawberry and it's crazy. It's crazy man. Just reaching out on social media. Darryl, you know, responding right away. I would love to join the show. I can't wait for this interview. It's going to be electric. I want to first get into a story before we start the interview. You know, for years while I was growing up, you know, |
| 1:25.0 | my mom, I would notice, you know, when she would go to whatever, Dunkin' Donuts or whatever, a local bagel shop or a McDonald or something like that, she would always never give money to homeless people. And I always asked her, oh, why don't you give money to the homeless people? Like, you know, these people are struggling. I didn't know no better, you know what I mean? |
| 1:45.6 | She's like, oh no, I don't want them to use the money |
| 1:47.8 | for something better, you know what I mean? |
| 1:45.5 | She's like, oh no, I don't want them to use the money for you know something bad or whatever like that fast forward years and years later um I Couple week like a week ago. I'd say I went to a pizzeria and I Didn't have easy pass at the time So what the fuck I would do was I would go to the bank go to the chase bank and always ask for 50 singles and put them in the glove |
| 2:08.8 | compartment so when I And I didn't have easy pass at the time. So what the fuck I would do was I would go to the bank, |
| 2:05.6 | go to the Chase bank and always ask for 50 singles and put them in the glove compartment. So when I drive through the, you know, I always had to wait on the, you know, the toll, the money one. I couldn't go through easy pass because I just never got it. I got easy pass now. But I just came in the mail last week. I was driving. I just left up Pizzerzeria in Livingston I'm driving and I'm going through Newark, New Jersey and It's pouring it's raining outside and I'm driving I'm stopped at a light and you know this guy would have Think a change a cup of change is like shaking it and I just reached into my glove compartment I didn't even know how many many singles I grabbed. I just gave it to him and the look on his face was like, I've been out here all day long and I haven't had nothing to eat and you know this just made my night and I'm driving away and you know there's people out there that would say, oh Jerry why do you why do you give money or why do you stop and why do you give these guys money? How do you know they're not gonna use it for drugs or alcohol? And I'm like, I don't know what the fuck they're gonna use it for. And I don't care what they're gonna use it for. Because you never know, that person might not have ate all day long and he starving and he could use a quick sandwich from somewhere. And it's none of my business where he uses the money. You know what I mean? It's none of my business. And I noticed as the years went on, and as I stayed sober, I noticed my mom today, we're in the car together if we're stopped at a light and there's a lot of homeless people down in New York, New Jersey, only a town over from where I live. She always gives money today and I ask her all the time, you know, years ago when we were kids, like you always looked at these people like, like differently, like they were, they were less than you and why, why is that? Why do you give them money today, you know what I mean? Why do you stop and you know, you give a dollar here, you give two dollars there. Why do you do it? And she's like, you know why? Because I realized that was you one day, that was you struggling. And I realized it helps other people just by giving back. And I told her, it's none of your business, where they use the money. It's none of your business, doesn't matter. Because there was stories and I'll tell you a quick story. There was this guy on YouTube, I his name and I was watching it. I think like a couple months back or a year back and this guy gave a homeless guy I think like a hundred dollar bill and the guy was like so happy he was crying he was thanking him he was bowing down to the guy that gave him the money and this guy followed him with a camera and What he did was this guy he met up with one of his friends another homeless guy They they walked together and they went to a McDonald's and they and they grabbed food and they sat down and ate together Inside a McDonald's and it's like like, you know, that person didn't use it for drugs man they they used it to get something to eat because they've been struggling you never know what somebody's been through you you can't just assume oh just because this guy's homeless he's a drug addict or just because this guy's homeless he's an alcoholic because you just don't know you just don't know and that's why like I don't care what anybody says. You know, if I want to give money that I worked for to help out somebody, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it because I don't know that other person's story. I don't know why they're homeless. And I don't know if they're gonna use it for drugs or alcohol. Maybe they'll use it for food or or maybe they'll use the $100 for a hotel room |
| 6:05.7 | or something like that. |
| 6:06.6 | You just don't know. So that's why I just wanted to share that story, because it's good to give back. And not only does it help somebody else, I really believe in good karma and putting good energy out there. And I'll tell you one thing, man, with the karma thing, just by doing right, you know, these last six and a half years, I've gotten paid back ten times over, bro. From, you know, just a relationship with family standpoint. My mom trusts me today. My mom doesn't worry today. I have a dream job. I work for a huge company |
| 6:46.0 | You know, I have good benefits. I have 401k. I have stock plan here |
| 6:52.7 | And I just wake up every morning and I come to work and I'm doing what I love and it's just it's just insane man |
| 6:59.6 | But I just want to share that story for everybody out there |
