Good morning in the news this morning. At least two people were injured after a multi-vehicle crash left a path of destruction in Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion section on Monday night. It happened just before 10 p.m. near 30th in Diamond Street. The driver of a red SUV hit another car and lost control before slamming into a home and a slew of other cars. The home was evacuated. It's now being evaluated by the Department of Licenses and Inspections.

At least two people were taken to an area hospital for unknown injuries, but no further details were being given on Monday night.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact police at 215-686 tips.

On Monday, Pennsylvania State Senate approved legislation to ban so-called safe injection sites after Philadelphia became the center of a legal battle over opening havens where opioid users could legally inject heroin and other drugs under supervision as a way to reduce overdoses.

The bill passed 41 to 9 with every Republican favor of it and 9 of 22 of Democrats against it.

Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, has said he opposes safe injection sites.

The subject has divided Democrats, making it unlikely that the bill will come up in the Democratic-controlled State House of Representatives.

The U.S. Department of Justice in 2021 won a lawsuit when the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia rejected a plan

to open a supervised injection site in the city. The court concluded the operation would violate a

1980s-era drug law aimed at crack houses. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to take the case.

The Justice Department has since said it is evaluating such facilities and talking to regulators about

appropriate guardrails. Rhode Island and New York City have allowed their use while the

governors of California and Vermont each vetoed safe injection site bills last summer.

Another major company is warning of shutdowns and mass layoffs in the face of a possible

bankruptcy. Weight loss giant Jenny Craig may shutter its corporate office as soon as this Friday, May 5th.

Jenny Craig could also file for bankruptcy this week if it can't find a buyer,

and this will have a domino effect impacting locations and employees here in our area

as the entire weight loss industry is experiencing a seismic shift in how it operates.
