Today is Thursday. It's April 18th. Good morning, Kathy. Good morning. In the news this morning,

a New Jersey man was arrested after attempting to enter St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan with two gasoline cans Wednesday night, police say.

Church ushers stopped 37-year-old Mark Lamperello at about 8 o'clock and notified nearby officers with the NYPD Critical Response Command who took him into custody.

No one was injured. The man's intentions were not immediately clear, but he is being described as emotionally disturbed.

Authorities say he drove to St. Patrick's, parked in front of sacks, and took two gas cans and lighter fluid from the car into the cathedral where he was stopped.

Counterterrorism officers were called and caught up with him.

He was not charged with a crime at this point, but is expected to be held for psychiatric evaluations. Padre, can you help me grab that other can? Yeah. He brought in a lot. He brought in four gallons and, you know, nonchalantly strolling in. Bitch getting them up those stairs. Damn, right? You know, got to do what you got to do. NYPD deputy commissioner John Miller said his basic story was that he was cutting through the cathedral to get to Madison Avenue and that his car had run out of gas. Seems viable. They said when they took a look at the vehicle, it was not out of gas. And at this point, he was taken into custody and brought to the Midtown North Station House. Miller said that Lamperllo is known to police and the NYPD is looking

into his background. The incident came two days after the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

There was a heavy police presence early Thursday morning outside the cathedral on Fifth Avenue.

St. Patrick's Cathedral was built in 1878 and they have installed a sprinkler-like system

during recent renovations and its wooden roof is coated with fire retardant.

Police said that two people were shot in a home invasion in Parkside early Thursday morning.

It happened at 1 a.m. in the 1400 block of North 56th Street.

Both victims, a 64-year-old resident and her 54-year-old boyfriend are expected to survive.

Now, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small says the victims were asleep in the second

floor bedroom when they were woken up by gunfire.

He said they basically woke up to them.

To the sounds of gunshots.

To them being shot.

Oh my God.

Small says it looks as if they broke into the house to shoot one or both of the victims. Police believe the shooter or shooters got in by breaking into the basement window at street level. The 64-year-old woman was in and out of consciousness as she was being rushed to Lankanae Medical Center. Officials say that she was shot multiple times in her leg and once in her hand. The 54-year-old man was hit in the torso. He was able to speak to police on his way to Penn Presbyterian Hospital. He told officers, nothing appeared to be stolen and the house was not ransacked, but he could not provide a description of the shooter or shooters. You just walk over to someone while they're asleep and just open up on them. Wow. Investigators are looking for footage from nearby surveillance cameras. Anyone with information is asked to contact them.
