You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith.

0:32.7

Hey there, sprouts. Today is Tuesday, July 6th, 2021. Now, this week on the Catholic Sprauds podcast, we are talking about the beatitudes.

0:48.0

Yesterday we talked about how this specific part of the sermon on the mount where Christ lays out eight ways where we can become blessed and happy offers us a portrait of who Christ was.

0:52.5

And how if we model our lives after him, we can be happy.

0:57.1

So the first beatitude, which is really the most important because it really contains all of the other beatitudes is this, blessed are the poor in spirit,

1:06.2

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the poor in spirit.

1:14.3

Now, in some translations, it says simply,

1:16.8

1:50.3

Now, what does it mean to be poor in spirit? Well, the big word to cling to as we talk about

1:58.1

this beatitude is the word detachment. I know detachment is a big

2:03.9

word, but detachment is simply meaning that no matter how many things you own, how big your bank

2:10.4

account is, or how fancy your card, no matter what, that you should never be too attached to it. Now, someone who is very rich could be actually

2:22.6

very, very happy and totally detached from their belongings. Maybe they freely give what they have.

2:31.7

Sure, they have lots of money, but they're very, very generous. On the other hand,

2:36.9

someone who is very poor, maybe they don't have very much, but what they have, they keep,

2:43.0

they refuse to share with anyone. And that person would be failing to live up to this beatitude.

2:50.5

So the true measure for how poor in spirit

2:55.0

we are is how generous we are, how willing we are to give what we have. Now, this beatitude,
