| 0:53.5 | Today is also the feast day of St. Damien of Molokai. |
| 0:55.8 | Now, St. Damien was born in Belgium, but he answered a call to the priesthood and went as a missionary to what was then the kingdom of |
| 1:03.2 | Hawaii. Now, at the time, leprosy was a terrible disease, very contagious, and people were |
| 1:10.7 | terrified of catching leprosy themselves. |
| 1:13.8 | So in Hawaii, all of those suffering from leprosy were sent to the island of Molokai. |
| 1:20.3 | They were basically abandoned there, and the people with leprosy just lived in terrible poverty |
| 1:26.0 | and loneliness. |
| 1:28.2 | And Father Damien volunteered to go to the island and minister to them. |
| 1:33.3 | Even though he knew that once he entered their community there, the leper community, |
| 1:38.3 | he would never be able to leave because people were so terrified of the spread of this disease. |
| 1:44.0 | But he gave his life, he ministered to them, |
| 1:46.5 | he said holy mass for them, and really helped them know that they were valued and loved. |
| 1:52.5 | Eventually, St. Damien caught leprosy himself, and he died of the disease there on that island. |
| 1:59.0 | He is an incredible example of bringing Christ's love and his |
| 2:03.3 | message to the darkest corners of our world. St. Damien of Molokai pray for us. Now this week on |
