You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith.

0:31.3

Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Tuesday, May 26, 2020. It is also the feast day of St. Philip Neri.

0:41.3

Now, St. Philip Neri was a priest, and he loved to laugh. He knew oftentimes that poking fun at himself and even being the butt of jokes could be a great path toward humility. He was a great lover of Jesus Christ and his heart

0:49.5

literally swelled with love for the world. So pray through the intercession of St. Philip

0:55.6

Neri and perhaps think about telling some jokes in his honor today. So this week on the Catholic

1:01.9

Sprouds podcast, we are talking about our lady of Cabejo, who appeared to visionaries in Rwanda,

1:08.5

Africa, in the 1980s, not that long ago.

1:12.6

Now, before we talk about the apparitions, I want to tell you about Cabejo.

1:17.5

Now, Cabejo is the name of the town where she appeared.

1:21.5

But if you're picturing a town like the town you live in, you're not quite understanding what Cabejo was. So Cabejo was not much of

1:32.8

anything. In fact, rural Rwanda is much more real than you can probably imagine. Now, the city or the

1:41.2

town of Cabejo had only a narrow dirt path riding up to it. That's it. You could barely get a car into the town. Most people that were there didn't have cars. They walked. There were goats wandering around. Really, Cabejo was simply a school where girls boarded and went to school and a couple of shops and a couple of houses with a few huts.

2:08.0

And that's it. It really wasn't connected to any sort of big city. Also, Rwanda in the 1980s was pretty unadvanced.

2:17.4

People were lucky if they had a radio. They certainly did not

2:20.9

have a television. And in the 1980s everywhere, nobody had computers. And certainly nowhere did

2:27.4

they have telephones in Cabejo. It was pretty isolated. In fact, the major thing in Cabejo was a boarding school for girls. It was a

2:36.7

Catholic boarding school run by religious sisters. And girls went there when they were about

2:42.5

high school age. They left their homes and they went to live at the school and only returned home

2:49.3

for holidays. Now, the first apparition appeared to a girl named Elphonzin.

2:56.5

Now, she was a quiet girl, but she came from an incredibly rural part of Rwanda, like super rural.

3:04.2

Like, we're talking no path leading up to the town at all. Everyone lived in huts,

3:10.2

very rural. And this part of Rwanda hadn't really been reached by the message of Christ.
