0:29.0	Today is also the feast day of a great American saint, St. Mary Ann Cope.
0:34.5	St. Mary Ann Cope was born in 1838 in Germany. But when she was still very young, her parents
0:42.3	immigrated to the United States, where she grew up. She grew up very poor. Her father was sick.
0:48.6	She had a limited education, had to stop going to school to support her family. But she eventually answered a call to religious
0:56.3	life. She spent many years teaching. Eventually, she became a superior in that order. And as a superior,
1:05.5	she took her sisters on a trip to Hawaii. They planned to be there for a couple of weeks,
1:11.3	tending to the lepers that were there in Hawaii.
1:14.4	But she ended up staying for 35 years.
1:18.4	She eventually started to work with St. Damien Amolakai,
1:22.9	tending to the lepers there.
1:24.5	She helped him die peacefully of leprosy.
1:29.6	And then she took over his work,
1:36.3	starting a girl's school, a choir, and just really helping people dying of leprosy in Hawaii live with dignity. Because of her love and care that she showed to those people and all people
1:42.1	that she served, she has been named a saint.
